An old drunk everybody called 'The Captain' was singing. Much to Zoltan's surprise, the patrons of the Howling Wind Tavern were listening closely. Or at least they kept respectively quiet.
"Her eyes! Oh her eyes... Her eyes are a blue million miles," the Captain hollered, in a voice half eaten away by hard liquor and smoke. It sounded raw and sincere, beautiful in a haunting way.
"Far as I can see... She loves me."
Zoltan, the old apothecary, smiled. It was an old song, one he knew well.
The old singer suddenly stopped, it seemed he'd lost the words. Zoltan stepped up, made his way slowly to 'The Captain', leaned close and whispered: "I look at her and she looks at me."
The Captain smiled a frighteningly big smile, as if he could remember the girl he sang about, even though the song had been around long before both his and Zoltan's time.
"I look at her and she looks at me," the Captain sang loudly, and Zoltan joined in: "In her eyes I see the sea!"
Old men, past their bedtime, sang all through the night until their voices no longer allowed it. For one whole night, everyone was reminded of better days. And it filled hearts of men and women, young and old, sick and strong alike with happiness...
