Annabelle walked in from the pouring rain. Her hair was soaked, as were her clothes. She tried to dry off as best as she could. Annabelle looked around the tavern, it seemed to be bouncing with life. There were people everywhere. I should be careful, you don't know who you could meet in a place like this. Annabelle thought as she walked around the tavern, her ice blue eyes searching the room.

Marric, a man with ambition, a plan but no course of action. A man who quit drinking, yet sits in an inn trying to find out where to start. A pipe in his mouth, the tobacco cleared his mind.
A girl entered, young and beautiful. Had he not seen her before? He would join the guard one of these days. he'd meant to do just that for several days already, but hadn't actually gone through with it.
The girl wasn't comfortable, Marric thought. And as his gaze wandered around the common room, the shepherd sprang to his feet and ran over to her.
"My lady," he said with a cough. Damn it! She'll think you're trying to do the opposite you're trying to do. be decent!
"I know it may sound strange coming from me, but there's unfriendly eyes upon you. The corner in the back of the common room, lit by torches. Three men and a fourth at the table next to them."
Marric gave her time to see for herself what he was talking about. Those men were seriously drunk.

Annabelle was suddenly approached by a man, who warned her to be weary of a group of men who were sitting at a table. She then looked at the man infront of her. " Thank you, for the help." Annabelle said gently. She wasn't sure if she could trust this man, but why would he help Annabelle. His intentions must be good. She wasn't sure if she wanted to stop talking to this man, for if she did stop talking to him she was open for any other drunken man to try and talk to her.

Marric was surprised at her trust. Maybe he underestimated her, but he didn't like her thanks. It made her seem ignorant.
"Don't thank me. I might slit your throat right now, you don't know me. And if I don't want to get my own hands dirty I can have someone else do it for the price of a cup of coffee and nobody will lift a finger.
"Truth is, miss. I may not look like much of an honest guy, but I am. That shouldn't stop you from mistrusting me, though. You should take me for what I look like and avoid me. Yet instead you thank me. Why? Is it because you can feel the good in me? I doubt it. Miss, listen to me and listen carefully. You don't look like much of a fighter, though maybe you are, and I'm instantly worried about your wellbeing. Are you staying in this inn?"

Annabelle listened to the man. She then said in a gentle tone, " I understand that being a bit to open to a stranger is dangerous, and to you I might seem a bit ignorant. But, you assuming that I was even going to trust you just because of a small act of kindness was far from reality. I am very aware of my surroundings, and the people around me. I don't trust just anyone, but just because your a stranger does not mean I have to lose my manners. And to just judge someone because of their apparel is far from my morals." Annabelle would not judge someone because of their appearence, but she wouldn't trust just anyone ethier.

"Ah," Marric said simply, with a satisfied grin. "Shall I leave you be then, miss?"
Marric was just about to turn away when one of the drunk men broke into the conversation.
"Is there a problem, missss?" he asked, moving close towards Annabelle. The drunk man's eyes were full of unconditional hate towards Marric.
"Miss," the shepherd said, "this is Benny."
"Shut up!"
"What's wrong, Benny?"
"Don't listen to him, his only actual friend is his dog. It affects a man's mind and appetites," Benny said, already touching Annabelle on places he shouldn't. "I'm Big Ben."
Marric looked at Anne, fully aware that she was being grabbed. He searched for eye contact. With a grin he waited for a shout of help, never pausing to think that the girl might not need any.

Annabelle watched as another man approached. She knew he was drunk for she could smell the vile scent from his clothes. He seemed to have hostile attitude toward Marric. " I am fine, but thank you for your concern." Annabelle replied ensuring the drunk man that she was fine. Annabelle then backed up a few steps, but the man only came closer. Annabelle was not going to be rude, but she said, " Please remove your hands from my body." Annabelle was very uncomfortable with him touching her.

Marric made no attempt to assist the girl, but got strategically in the way of two more of the drunken men wo were sitting at the table. They were making for Anna as well, no doubt, and while Marric might seem a little mean in this, he's not evil. The two men push and the shepherd excuses himself, trying to get into a conversation, eventually buying them drinks to keep them from the young woman.

Annabelle was in a quite uncomfortable position. She asked calmly for Benny to remove his hands from her, but he didn't seem to grasp the concept. She then said in a soft tone, " Please remove your hands, or I will have to remove them with force." Annabelle was struggling to free her arm from his grasp.

"I suggest force, dear lady!" Marric shouts at Annabelle, with not even a hint of a grin left on his face. He smashed a bottle on the table, using the shattered remains as a weapon, pointing it at one of the two drunks he was keeping busy. Bucolica, Marric's sheepdog, snarled wickedly at the other to keep him at bay as well. The rest of the drunk men at the other table, made no attempt to aid their drinking brothers, so Marric took them for respectable men, though a bit tipsy.
"Stay right where you're at, boys," Marric said, trying his best to keep an eye on them and the other on the young woman.

Annabelle saw that Marric had the other men at bay, and with this she took action. Benny was holding only one of her arms, the other was free. So with her free hand she grabed a dagger which was hidden under her white cloak. She placed the dagger at Benny's neck. Benny then automatically removed his hands. Annabelle then said, " If you wish to drink another pint, then I suggest you keep your hands to yourself." Benny then walked away with the warning. Annabelle then placed her dagger underneath her cloak once again.

Marric laughed as he walked over to Anne.
"Marvellous! I applaud your every move. I'm Marric Las..."
Just then, the shepherd was struck on the back of the head with a bottle, an empty one, luckily. The ragged man fell to the floor as did his assailent who was in turn being taken down by Bucolica.
Marric passed out.

( I am going to skip ahead a few hours, after Marric was knocked out. Annabelle has taken Marric to her room, and placed him on her bed. She is now taking care of both Marric, and his dog until they wake up.)
Annabelle had a bar tender help carry Marric to her room. She then had Marric softly placed on the bed. She gave the bar tender a tip, and let him on his way. Annabelle gingerly attended to Marric's wound. After his wound was taken care of Annabelle, placed a wet cloth on Marric's head. Annabelle then started to unpack her things that she had bought from town. She had four books, and some food. Annabelle prepared a small dinner for Marric. This was her way of thanking him for his kindness. Annabelle placed a loaf of bread, and home-made curry in a clay bowl on the bedside table. After Marric was taken care of, Annabelle started to intently read her books. She would wait until Marric woke up.

(fine  ) Marric groaned and stirred in the bed. He instantly went into a coughing fit and let out a shout of pain as he touched the back of his head. "Damn," he grunted, and then added: "Come on, it's not that bad a wound." At that moment Bucolica came up to the bed and silently greated his master by licking his hand. "Hey, brother. I'm fine. Where are we?" |

Annabelle who was sitting silently reading her book on the other side of the room, heard Marric wake. She placed her book down, and walked over to him. She came to the bed side. " I hope you are feeling better." Annabelle said, and continued," A bartender helped me carry you up to my room after you passed out. Your wound was bad, but with a little water and some medicine I cleaned it. Your wound should be fine now, it should still hurt though but that is only natural. Your food is at your bedside, once you eat you are free to leave." Annabelle ended with a smile.

Marric rubbed his eyes, they stung. Some blood had gotten into his eyes, and his vision was slightly blurred. He had been hit harder than he'd thought. The plate next to the bed suddenly caught his attention.
"I've not met this selfless a person in years," Marric said, "I thank you, miss."
The shepherd gave Bucolica a piece of meat and started to eat himself as well. The food tasted good, a soldier's meal. Nothing too fancy, though it clearly tasted like a woman cooked it. He paused and looked up at the woman.
"What are you reading?"

Annabelle was pleased that Marric was feeling better, and that he was eating a good meal. She then responded to his question, " This old book is known as the " History of Magic." It traces back to the first wizard, and those following. It is very intresting, you may take a look at it if you like." Annabelle said passing it to him. " I am not sure that I introduced myself properly. My name is Annabelle Atria. I wanted to thank you for your help early." Annabelle said smiling.

"Are you a magicker?" Marric asked, eyebrows raised, "or is this just leisure reading?"
Marric narrowed his eyes and tried to read the small print. There were drawings amongst the terrifyingly complex sentences. MArric was never properly schooled.
"Syn... Sinit, Synti... Synthesis. Wow, mighty big words, miss. You're more than witty, I reckon. You're simply bright."
Marric laughed and coughed.
"Pleased to meet you, Annabelle Atria. I am known as Marric Laster. I'm grateful of your thoughtfulness, but I imagine having a man such as me in your bed makes you uncomfortable. I'm no pretty sight, Annabelle, and I know it. Perhaps it is best that me and my brother begone. What say you?"
Marric held the book out towards the young woman as he got up.

" I am a magicker, but I rather be called a wizard. Yet, ethier way I am what I am. " Annabelle said with a smile on her face. Annabelle watched and listened as Marric introduced himself, got to his feet, and handed her the book back. " Well, Marric your kindness will never be forgotten. I thank you for helping me, but I am afriad we must part. I have much buisness in town, that needs to be taken care of. I shall remeber you as a friend, as I hope you shall me." Annabelle said coming to her feet, and taking the book from Marric.

"I wouldn't want to keep you from business, Annabelle," Marric mumbled, rubbing his eyes. A headache was coming up. He was slightly uncomfortable about this perfect stranger who called him a friend already. But he could accept it and nodded to Anna to show that he will as of now consider them to be friends. He just wanted to get that blur out of his vision.
"Where's Zoltan when you need him?" he muttered, followed by a coughing fit.
