Hmm...I'm really thikning about the idea of a cloud city....I'd like to have a winged geezer myself...I'm also quite stuck on the idea of there being an academy...But the question is, what exactly is it for? why are they training to be...WHAT are hey training to be.
I'm thinking that if the magic is implemented we could make them have perhaps more, and much stronger magic, exclusive to them, which they learn in the academy...
If anyone has seen Naruto, that's the lines I'm thinking along here.

I'm thinking if there a guardian race there a bit to much like angels.
tell me what you think
Race: Araceli
Age: Immortal
Basic Background: Since they live in tribes they must separate the land in halves, but they only have one elder, the elder of all tribes.
Personality / Appearance: Quite timid but they're not big talkers. they would have wing, black or white depending on it's tribe. hair colour would be random but is usually black, white, Grey, silver, gold, or the colours of some gem stones.
Tribes: the Azengale, tribe of light trained with light magic. then there is frimesstall, the tribe of darkness.
And if any one has any ideas please speak.

I still like these ideas...I'm really thinking of adding in another race along those lines.

I know this thread hasn't been posted to in almost a month (not sure why, since I just joined, namely to post here), but if you're looking for a 'winged' race that's got a strong magic affinity, in Legend of Dragoons there was a race called the Winglies that had magic-type wings that were retractable and focused more on magic. They also used to live in floating cities.
Just an idea. It's a favorie of mine so I figured I'd mention it.

Excuse my double post.
I've decided I will add another race, a winged race. This is definite now. It will happen. And they will have less restrictive rules on magic, they will be able to learn a wide range of spells.
As yet, they have no name, and no home, because I'm undecided on these things. They will have some sort of city and independent community. And perhaps an academy, where they learn to harness the inherent magical talent.
Hmm...apart from that, there's nothing concrete in my mind, so if you've got something to say, say it.

Splendid! Euhm....
Question: Will it be the same with them as it was with the greamers? Have these flying brothers always been there or are they more like... new arrivals?

Y'know, I never even thought of that, I guess I was just going to have them always have been there.
I was thinking though...Of having them have some sort of ancient Roman/Greek kind of flavour...Not that I know anything much about either of those things. So I'd mostly just be winging it. (pardon my pun)
I was thinking maybe in terms of architecture, names, a senate like body, things like that.

hmmm, sort of like mythological creatures come to life?
as for a name, how about Yaroqoi, sounds somewhat avian.
they would definately be arrogant. and how about being like bird people, with heads like eagles or something and covered in feathers, so they're not just like humans with wings?
just a few ideas.

Wow, yeah, definitely birdheads. I'd assumed this from the beginning. Like incarnations of of Horus Hehe, hey! That's, perhaps, too weird, but it would be cool to have multiple possibilities: humans with wings and birdheads and feathers. Humans with fur, a tail, and cat eyes. Nah, that's no good. But what really would be cool is: different clans... Depending on the clan you get owl-like birdfolk, eagle-like cloudpeople or hawk-like skydudes and others like swallow-like flymen.

Not so sure about the bird heads...
But I can definately get with the clan idea, sort of like the dark elves maybe. Different coloured wings would be a good indicator, and because I have a thing about different coloured eyes, maybe that too.
For the name...Maybe something a little...Latin, or Greek?
Unless of course you aren't feeling the mythological angle, then Mak's name is good. It really depends what you lot think. I like it when we're all happy and can reach a compromise, since it's going to effect all of us.

So far, I'm benevolently ambivalent to every part of the winged discussion. I agree with everything everyone says. Except Viktor: that guy's weird....
So, whatever you decide to do, I'm behind you 94%!
I will say this, however. Throughout the entire conversation, before the birdheads were brought up, I was imagining birdheads. Horus is a good example, but my mind's eye was picturing those messenger birds from Wind Waker.
Wings not from their backs in addition to their arms, but wings and arms are one and the same. Humanoid, except for the birdhead, feathers and wings. Probably a tail. Bird, not rat.
But I can see how that's too aquiline for some people to like.

Okay I am still new...waiting for approval of character concept before posting his intro... but the fact that you said thinking along the lines of Naruto...well I am hooked to this board now lol.
As for my thoughts on this... as a way to introduce the new race Babylon 5 popped into my head. Like the shadows and vorlons. Maybe they were always there, kind of like the guardians of forgotten lore with their more powerful magic, but noone ever KNEW they were there. As it is noone (at least as far as I know) has the ability to truly fly. What if there were two tribes, white wings and black wings (and you can further sort into caste by eye color like, white eyes for priests, red eyes for warriors, blue eyes for arcane, or something like that) who have always been at odds on how to Guard or Help the "earthbound" races? Maybe someone discovers a long lost spell, or someone finds an ancient unexplained artifact, or maybe one of the two tribes reveals itself deciding to finally make a more direct approach forcing the hand of the other tribe. In Babylon remember the Vorlons were very secretive and it is revealed that they were behind religion and used manipulation to "direct" the evolution of the races, while the shadows instigated wars and conflict believing in a "survival of the fittest" type of evolution.
If that fails maybe you could still make three tribes, one for each type of magic. Guardians of the Neutral, Dark, and Light and make their eye color represent their "major" focus. I can see a black winged pale skinned "angel of darkness" with red orbs for eyes who specialises in Dark Blood magic, or a Silver winged glowing eyed Guardian of Light who specializes in holy magic.
Again I am a newcomer so feel free to ignore me but the idea of this race intrigues me.

You certainly raise some interesting stuff there. Although, I'm not familiar with Babylon 5, of course, the whole revelation of the species, or not as it may prove to be, is still undecided, though for sheer ease of people getting right into it, it's likely that I will have them be a familiar race around Elendhel, dwelling in high cities in some mountain range somewhere.
It's looks like people are happy with the tribes/clan ideas. but the question now is...How many should there be?
White wings and black wings? Or perhaps both with numerous small tribes among them, akin to the noble elf families, or perhaps, lots more clans, more like the families in (once again) Naruto, by which I mean each clan or family has their own distinguishing traits.

Or there might be a war... As said before. Between Melién Forest and Dark elves or orcs n gobs... And this threatens to unbalance the world. So the intervention of those winged dudes is needed. Perhaps someone sets out to find them? or they find certain people to do certain things. And at war's end... They're proven to be helpful and are accepted into society, so they may individually choose to be arcane supervisors and all that, or just common folk who live a quiet life like anyone else? How's that? I'm still thinking about a story and that moot. My thinking about that is complicating the entire idea, so, feel free to ignore this old rat (wink at Keros)
Keros, my man. There will be no ignoring you if I've a say in it! I am, for one, grateful that you speak your mind, truly! I like you already :-D

I like Keros' idea. But I also like Zoltan's idea. Perhaps there could be a way that we could put them bothe together into one ginormous idea.
Like we could use the three tribe thing but have a war between all three tribes. Or the three tribes are forced to work together to fight in a war against all the evil races that can't fly, for example Dark elfs, Orcs, etc. Or something along those lines, I am just throwing some ideas out there.
