Perhaps you know of the writersduo Margarett Weis and Tracey Hickman? Well anyhow, I read the Deathgate cycle and I simply loved it. Just putting a recommendation here (It's a series: 7 parts)

I can't say I've ever heard of it.
It's worth checking out then is it? What are they about?

The Deathgate cycle is about the Sartans who split the world in multiple worlds: Stone, Fire, Air and Sea and an additional world the Nexus where the Patryns are imprisoned in the labyrinth (a terrible place). Xar is a Patryn who escaped and he's gathering an army to seek vengeance on the Sartans. So he sends Haplo, his most promising apprentice through the Deathgate to those other worlds to investigate and cause chaos. The plot gets a lot more complicated but I'd be spoiling the fun if I told you... Offcourse there's also elves and dwarves and humans but they are weak and stupid according to the Sartans and Patryns who use very powerful rune magic.
There's really too much to say. It's the best fantasy story I've ever read.

Best you've ever read?
BETTER than LOTR?
I can't swallow that, but I'll look into it. Thanks for the recommendation.

Did I say I read LotR? ...The crowd goes silent, people getting ready to jump the man who said this (kill...kill...kill...). "Nonono, dear people! Let us not be rash... I DID read the Lord of the Rings. Although I must add I like the Hobbit more... Why? Well, it was much more humorous... For one. And that's exactly what is to be read in the Deathgate cycle: more humor and (I'm afraid) fantasy that is more impressive... and in a way realistic.
I must add that I didn't like the other books I've read from Weis&Hickman. But these seven books I speak of... Loverly.

Wow...The Hobbit better than LOTR seriously?
The LOTR is the definitive fantasy work. I could never love a book more than I love that.
But by the sound of it this must be some pretty special stuff that you've read. Does it have the kind of depth of detail that Tolkien has? Or is it entirely more flippant, sounds as much with the added humour. I don't doubt that it's accurate and consistent throughout, but I suspect the depth grows gradually throughout the series as opposed to have a large base to draw from i.e The Silmarillion.
Would I be assuming correct? I guess what I'm asking is, am I going to find a similar level of immersion in this world as to middle-earth?
(P.S. Yes, unfortunately I compare all fantasy works to Rings, I know I shouldn't as the fantasy style varies, but I've yet to find anything to best it, or provide such a believable, living, breathing world)

Well, I can see you know what you're talking about... And I don't *coughs*. The problem is that we're speaking of 4 totally different worlds (with the fifth: the Nexus) for instance: Arianus is the world of Air and the elves are at war with the humans and eventually even the dwarves while on Chelestra (world of the Sea) the elves, humans and dwarves live in peace and harmony and love eachother. Abarrach is the world of Stone and I tell you, I was so scared when I read it. On Arianus there's this mysterious machine and I kept thinking: "what the hell does it do?". Pryan (world of fire) was probably the most fun but again, it goes wrong...
On every world, Haplo (main character) and his dog will find trouble, each one more dangerous than the previous one. And as he follows orders from Xar, more mysteries unfold in front of him. His emotional status is very well illustrated and I really have to stop talking... I won't say you will like it better than LotR (or the hobbit if you will), but I don't think you will regret reading the Deathgate cycle.

This Utzrune is on ehell of a guy! What taste! What... eloquently illustrated... facts! What charisma! ...
I, and I'm in no way like this strange guy, would like to add that, Arin... I doubt you'll be more immersed in this world than in the one created by Tolkien. But if you reach the 5th book, read it carefully. 'Cause that's the one I liked best, I think.

i agree Weis & Hickman are like gods of fantasy,
WAY WAY WAY better then TOLKIEN, and don't get a heart attack, i think TOLKIEN is just an average writher you know, the books are good, but i read much much better.
i can give you a whole list of writhers that are equal or better then tolkien. if your interested btw, also read dragonlance serie form weis and hickman or was that only weis or only hickman, hmm should look into that.

Yeah, you've picked a most unfortunate moment to join. "Now is the winter of our discontempt," said Richard the third which has nothing to do with this... I guess what I'm trying to say is... I would have you explain your "blasphemy" so I could understand.

The Dragonlance series is amazing, and i must admit better than LOTR, not that i like it that much though. but thee is so much depth by weis and hickman, plus the other writers, just so many.
